European Naturism from a Nordic Outlook

Naturism In Norway and European Nudity
Nudism In Norway – Last summer, my family was at a playa vacationing jointly with another family that we have understood for years. Shortly after we arrived at the sand, the daddy of the other family stripped his youngest child who was maybe three years old at the time nude and sent the kid to play at the border of the water. Almost as an afterthought he turned to me, with a look of worry on his face, and said You know it is OK that he is nude, right?
Now, a small circumstance this plage wasn’t in the United States, but in Norway.
The father asked me if I knew it was OK struck me as strange at the time, but in hindsight makes perfect sense. Despite the fact that he and I are both Norwegian, and we were in Norway, he still felt the need to check with me to make sure I didn’t believe he was abusing his kid in some way.
Nudism In Norway –
The American perspective of nudity as sexual at best, and criminal at worst, is the single biggest issue the nudist community faces. We often wish that everyone in America had exactly the same mindset as residents of more liberal nations.

But why are those states like that in the first place? It’s often joked that many Americans can’t even locate North America on a map let alone states elsewhere. So we don’t anticipate many people to understand what makes other states tick socially.
For me, I can only just speak for nudism in Norway, which will be My wife has always been hesitant to go naked on the beach of origin. But many of the nations of Europe and elsewhere share certain social traits are extremely different from America and that make the people’s view of nudity considerably more forgiving. They comprise:
Compulsory Sex Education
Sex education is compulsory in Norway. There is absolutely no abstinence only choice. (Like most countries, Norway isn’t subdivided into states that have powers separate in the national government.) So there isn’t any shielding kids from the realities of sex and the body. Sex teachers have long asserted that speaking to kids early and often about sex goes a long way toward removing the taboo surrounding the issue, and makes them not as likely to engage in it recklessly since they understand the potential outcomes. It is no wonder in America, then, that the demonization of sex and the equating of nudity with sex has made people fearful of exploring naturism.
National Broadcaster
Like many nations, Norway has a government-owned transmission business along with privately-owned media outlets. The assignment of the national broadcaster would be to present the news not to earn money. It’s financed by a small licensing that households pay. Compare this to America, where media is not only 100% independently-owned, but a sizeable portion is owned by a small group of large companies.
To keep the readers and the audience coming, privately-owned media needs sensational reports along with the everyday news. And because sex and nudity are My First Nudist Experience -banned of the forbidden fruits, they make for the best news stories particularly when sensationalized. Nudity is rarely portrayed positively in American media, and is often presented in the context of what can only be called Naked Crime stories about people committing crimes while they are actually nude (not because they can be naked, though that important difference is deliberately obscured in many cases).
Since national broadcasters aren’t profit-driven, the sleaze level is close to zero. (For an English language example of a national broadcaster, research the British Broadcasting Company [BBC]).
Lesser Role for Faith
The nations of Scandinavia are known because of their near-complete dearth of spiritual fervor. Around 20% of Scandinavians consider themselves believers, when compared with a much higher percentage in the States.
Religion is probably the prime driver of anti-nudity sentiment, both in the USA and other conservative nations (though we in the nudist community recognize, praise and encourage the contribution of spiritual naturist groups who are striving to exemplify that beliefs and nudism aren’t mutually exclusive). Maybe the most extraordinary case of body-pity is the burqa, a complete-body cloak that is required to be worn by many Muslim girls.
As for Christianity, the dominant faith in America, we need not look any further than the first book of the Bible to understand why a lot of adherents are nude-averse. The story of Adam and Eve is among the Bible’s best-known narratives – and possibly among the most misunderstood. Much to the detriment of naturism, Eve’s actions in the Garden of Eden fall under the Naked Offense class. Instead, they’d bitten into the apple from the Tree of Knowledge which God had expressly forbidden. He was tipped off simply by the fact that the next time He saw them, they’d covered up their littles. Nudity didn’t lead to the crime. But the crime was committed while naked.
Conclusion
These are just a couple of many differences which make the challenge for naked acceptance that much more difficult within the United States. But what we do should comprehend is the totality of the forces which are working against naturists.
Just as much as girls are under-represented in the nudist community, so are young adults of both genders. Our assignment must not only be to practice nudism in defiance of these negative perceptions, but to educate and provide opportunities for the nude-inquisitive. This battle will be uphill all the way, and none of the barriers in our course are going away any time soon.
